Here is a step-by-step guide for making an American-style sushi roll:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of sushi rice
- 2 cups of water
- 1/4 cup of rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 4 sheets of nori seaweed
- 1/2 cucumber
- 1/2 avocado
- 8 cooked shrimp
- Soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger for serving
Instructions:
- Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and transfer it to a medium-sized saucepan. Add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
- In a small saucepan, heat the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat.
- Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and add the rice vinegar mixture. Use a rice paddle or wooden spoon to gently mix the rice and vinegar until the rice is evenly coated. Let the rice cool to room temperature.
- Cut the cucumber and avocado into thin slices. Peel and devein the cooked shrimp.
- Place a sheet of nori on a sushi mat or a clean kitchen towel. Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking and spread 1/2 cup of sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top edge.
- Arrange the cucumber, avocado, and cooked shrimp on top of the rice in a horizontal line, about 1 inch away from the bottom edge of the nori.
- Lift the bottom edge of the nori with the help of the sushi mat or kitchen towel and roll it tightly over the filling. Use gentle pressure to ensure the roll is tightly packed.
- Once the roll is complete, use a sharp knife to cut it into 8 equal pieces.
- Serve the sushi rolls with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
