Originating from Morocco, tagine is a classic North African dish that’s traditionally slow-cooked in a clay pot. Our take on this classic recipe uses a mix of flavorful spices like cumin, coriander, and paprika to create a rich and aromatic base for the fish. We also add in some chickpeas and veggies to give the dish a nutritious boost.

To make this delicious recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 1 lb of firm white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tbsp of ground cumin
  • 1 tsp of ground coriander
  • 1 tsp of paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped

To start, heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic and sauté until they’re golden brown. Next, add the diced tomatoes, sliced bell pepper, chickpeas, and spices, and stir to combine. Let the mixture cook for a few minutes until the veggies have softened and the spices are fragrant.

Add the fish fillets to the pot and spoon the tomato mixture over the top. Cover the pot with a lid and let the fish cook for 10-15 minutes, or until it’s cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

Once the fish is cooked, remove the lid and add the sliced lemon and chopped cilantro on top. Serve the tagine hot with some rice or couscous for a complete meal.
